A monster in your closet? or under the bed? What did he look like??? With all the active imaginations around here, I'm sure there were several incarnations...
And-- not having very high hopes for the movie-- but it has got me thinking about my childhood "boogeyman."
He was invisible and lived under my bed and had a really sharp machete and would chop off any piece of my body that might hang off over the side of the bed. To this day, it unnerves me to hang a limb off the side of the bed!

I never really had a monster in the closet, or under the bed.
But I was scared to death thinking what could be outside my window at night (Werewolf, Kothoga, etc.).
Still am, by the way.

Once I almost jumped from a third floor in the school, when I was like 6 years. There was an earthquake and some child shouted:
GODZILLA !!!!

Mine was a 16 legged Spider creature. I still get unnerved when I realize some part of me is out from the covers over the edge :confused"
Derived from a stint in the boy scouts where I went camping and awoke the next morning with spiders on my face and neck. - never was the same about them after that - they use to not bother me. Now - I go on spider-hunts with an air rifle (no ammo)

Man! It's so weird! I never had any cool boogyman!
The only thing I can remember like that was the first time I saw Jaws, I had trouble sleeping because I didn't want Jaws to come out from under my bed, and eat me!
...Of course there wasn't water under my bed....I was just dumb!

I was terrified of aliens. I actually had insomnia as a child because I was too afraid to sleep. I thought they'd beam through my window and get me (I watched way too many episodes of unsolved mysteries).
I thought they were like the common idea of aliens..gray in color, big heads, huge almond shaped black eyes with no whites..spindly fingers and skinny bodies. Little more than oddly formed skeletons with some skin stretched over them, really.
I also had a terrible fear of disembodied glowing eyes. It sounds odd, yes, but when I was a child I read many books on supposedly true encounters with the supernatural. One story mentioned someone looking out of their window one night and seeing a pair of glowing red eyes staring back at them. That freaked me out far more than any other ghostly thing I read about..for months I wouldn't look out of the windows at night, lest I see a pair of glowing eyes.
So I guess my boogeyman was an alien with glowing red eyes, if you want to combine the two. heh.
These days my "boogeyman" is something in my dreams that lurks in the woods behind my house. Ever since we've lived here, I've had nightmares about some sort of danger in there. Sometimes it's a person, sometimes it's a beast, sometimes it's more like a faceless, formless fear..just the knowledge that there is something in there that wishes me a great deal of harm. I generally have dreams about it three or four times a week.

My boogieman? My mother. I'm a regular Freudian textbook case.

growing up we had a neighbor, Mr. Feller, who had bees. the ONLY time he was outside his house he was in his bee keepers outfit and/or covered in bees. If you were even in eyesite of him he would yell for you to get away. creepy.
my mom said his mother lived with him and died while he was away for a month...and wasnt found till he got home.
thanks mom! good story for a 6 yr old!!!
